My latest book, Surroundings: A History of Environments and Environmentalisms, has just been published by the University of Chicago Press. It’s a real thrill to finally see the book in print after years of figuring out just what I wanted to say, and then a few more years of actually writing it down, and then another year or so of getting it into print.
Surroundings is my attempt to understand why people in various times and places have begun to think about their surroundings as “environments,” as a way toward thinking about how we might want to think differently about our environment(s) today. I’m excited to see what readers make of it.
